Big Girl TV

Right now I'm watching this Lifetime movie called "To be Fat Like Me". I missed the beginning, and from what I am gathering, it's about this skinny teen who comes from a family of big people, and she decides to disguise herself as a fat girl and records her experiences. Of course she is teased, ridiculed, etc but she also makes friends (with a nerdy guy and another big girl) and further big girl escapades ensue.

Is there something in the water? I've noticed a spike in big girl entertainment! Drop Dead Diva is returning for another season, AND there was this whole controversy with Lane Bryant, FOX and ABC...Lane Bryant has a new commercial for their lingerie and FOX and ABC refused to show the ad, claiming "There's too much cleavage". Uhm, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Victoria Secret ads just BURSTING (no pun intended) with cleavage? Sometimes I feel like I need to create my own outlets for plus size women to feel comfortable and accepted. I once had the idea to create a plus-size mall. All the stores would be for big girls of different ages and styles, and for laughs, have a few skinny girl stores sprinkled in there, haha. I thought it was a great idea, until someone said to me, "Don't you think you would be accused of being discriminant against thin people?" I could see how someone could assume that, but one could also assume that that is the aim behind EVERY MALL IN AMERICA. I just want plus size women to enjoy shopping the same way thin people do; free to go to basically any store they'd please, where the clothes are displayed nicely and up front, rather than to one particular store in one particular mall, or in the big department store where the big girl clothes are shoved away in the back corner next to the clearance, maternity clothes and housewares. Also, what's Old Navy's deal with making their plus size clothes available online only? They have THE NERVE to promote their plus size line as "exclusively online", as if plus size women are going to feel special that they have to take a gamble with shopping on a website? My logic is, plus size women have the same spending power as thin women. So why not make more style choices available to us? Not only will it get our butts out the house, but 9 times out of ten we'll go shopping with a friend, therefore bringing in MORE profit for these businesses.

But back to big girl entertainment. Another thought is, why are plus size issues being used to raise awareness to our "problem: or for comic relief rather than casting plus size women for regular roles? I suppose Drop Dead Diva may be a different case (or rather, a hybrid of both areas) but the fact remains: all shows that feature a plus size girl in the lead role make sure to emphasis that she is a plus size woman and she is experiencing her problems because of that.

I could go on all day about this stuff but I'll have mercy :)

So far, my plan to lose weight has had trouble taking off :( and I admit, that's my fault. I decided to start doing a MINIMUM of 100 crunches at night. I even bought a yoga mat so I wouldn't have to lay on my hard ass floor. I was a member at crunch gym but it was getting ridiculously expensive so I joined 24 hour fitness, which is cheaper and I can visit any club I want! I also found a workout buddy so I'm excited jump back into my routine.

Anyway, off to do my crunches! Any thoughts on Big Girl TV?

Til next time...
